Carly, who spent her childhood growing up in Haworth, NJ, was diagnosed with gastric cancer on October 8th, 2012, just two days before her 24th birthday. She endured multiple operations and weeks of chemotherapy and radiation before losing her heroic battle on February 17th, 2013.

Carly spent her last months determined to beat the disease, inspiring everyone around her--- including her family, friends, and the entire medical team supporting her. The determination Carly portrayed during her cancer treatment was the perfect example of the passion she exhibited in life.

It was Carly’s intention to dedicate her life to children, and to others who were less fortunate. It is the goal of the Foundation to carry on Carly’s mission and provide education for children in need, as well as support research for the prevention and treatment of gastric cancer and the Carly Elizabeth Hughes Vascular Research Fund that has been established at Columbia University Medical Center.

Holy Family School - Natchez, MS

In May 2011, Carly graduated with a degree in Education and Mathematics from Boston College. While at BC she participated in, and led, a service trip to the Holy Family School. It is the oldest African-American Catholic School in the United States. The school has been forced to downsize and continues to struggle financially. Carly wanted to assist the school in whatever way she could.

Proceeds will be allocated to support:

The Holy Family School in Natchez, MS.

The Carly Elizabeth Hughes Memorial Vascular Research Fund and the esophageal and gastric cancer research fund of Dr. Julian Abrams at Columbia University Medical Center.

Organizer: Irene Vouvalides

I lost my best friend, my only child, my beautiful 24 year old daughter Carly Elizabeth Hughes to esophageal-gastric cancer on February 17th, 2013. Like so many of us who have experienced this devastating loss my daughter’s passing sent me on a spiritual quest. I have found friends and comfort through this remarkable group Helping Parents Heal. In the short time since Carly’s passing I have had definite proof that consciousness survives physical death, that Carly is well, and with me always. I have been fortunate to speak with mediums who were able to provide absolute evidence of the afterlife, indisputable information relayed bringing comfort and helping to lighten the heavy weight of grief.
